42. With the adoption of resolution 53/77 D of 4 December 1998, the General Assembly for the first time unanimously welcomed the declaration by Mongolia of its nuclear-weapon-free status.

The General Assembly, at its fifty-third session in 1998, adopted a resolution wherein it welcomed the declaration by Mongolia of its nuclear-weapon-free status as an important element in strengthening regional peace, security and stability.

The draft resolution goes back to 1998, when the General Assembly in its resolution 53/77 D welcomed the declaration by Mongolia of its nuclear-weapon-free status. Every second year since then, this Committee has adopted a draft resolution on this item, without a vote.
