The new Officer would lead the Unit, cover several countries in the region and monitor developments in the Balkans from a regional perspective, following cross-cutting aspects that influence regional stability, including illicit drug and human trafficking, organized crime, democratic governance and civil society.

11. In its resolution 56/110 of 14 December 2001, the General Assembly requested the Secretary-General to report on the implementation of the resolution on economic assistance to the Eastern European States affected by the developments in the Balkans at its fifty-eighth session.
