Y. Diallo, in Luanda on 17 and 18 June 1999.

The present report is submitted pursuant to the request of the Security Council in its presidential statement of 21 January (S/PRST/1999/3), in which the Council, inter alia, requested me to report to it on consultations with the Government of Angola on a continued multidisciplinary presence of the United Nations.
١ - يقدم هذا التقرير بناء على طلب مجلس اﻷمن الوارد في بيان رئيسه الصادر في ٢١ كانون الثاني/ يناير (S/PRST/1999/3) الذي طلب فيه المجلس مني، في جملة أمور، أن أقدم تقريرا عن المشاورات مع حكومة أنغولا بشأن وجود اﻷمم المتحدة المتعدد التخصصات.

I have the honour to refer to the statement of the President of the Security Council dated 21 January 1999 (S/PRST/1999/3), in which the Council requested me to report to it on the status of my consultations with the Government of Angola on a continued multidisciplinary presence of the United Nations in that country.

The members of the Council expressed their concerns at the situation in that country and the difficulties in the relationship between Angola and Zambia and expressed support for the Secretary-General’s consultation with the Government of Angola regarding a future United Nations office in Angola.

Moreover, the Mission was obliged to enter into and continue protracted negotiations with the Government of Angola regarding disposition of the substantial amount of assets valued at $38.1 million remaining in the country after the transfer of equipment to other peacekeeping operations and United Nations Logistics Base at Brindisi.

Following the Secretary-General’s briefing of 11 February, the members of the Council on 18 February received an update from the Secretary-General’s Special Representative on Angola, Issa Diallo, regarding his ongoing discussions with the Government of Angola regarding the possible nature of a continuing United Nations presence.
