72. Benin expressed gratitude for progress achieved by Nigeria in the promotion and protection of human rights that has a salutary impact on members of the Economic Community of West African (ECOWAS).
72- وأعربت بنن عن الامتنان للتقدم الذي حققته نيجيريا في تعزيز حقوق الإنسان وحمايتها، وهو تقدم له تأثير، جدير بالثناء، على أعضاء الجماعة الاقتصادية لدول غرب أفريقيا.

Regarding the establishment of a United Nations office in the subregion, the Secretary-General noted that there were already a number of offices in the subregion, as well as other initiatives in which the members of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) were involved.

Lastly, at a time when the members of the Economic Community of West African States were considering the advisability of adopting the UNCITRAL texts on electronic commerce, it was important for the Commission to reach out to those countries and others in Africa which were engaged in regional integration projects aimed at harmonizing their national laws.
75 - واختتم كلامه قائلا إنه في الوقت الذي ينظر فيه أعضاء الجماعة الاقتصادية لدول غرب أفريقيا في استصواب اعتماد نصوص الأونسيترال بشأن التجارة الالكترونية، من المهم أن تتواصل اللجنة مع تلك البلدان وغيرها من البلدان الأفريقية التي تشارك في مشاريع للتكامل الإقليمي تهدف إلى التنسيق بين قوانينها الوطنية.

10. Mr. Effah-Apenteng (Ghana), speaking on behalf of the members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), said that the request for observer status was a natural extension of the deepening relationship between ECOWAS and the United Nations.

The present report is submitted pursuant to Security Council resolution 1116 (1997) of 27 June 1997 and contains an account of developments in Liberia since my last report, dated 13 August 1997 (S/1997/643), including an update on discussions relating to Liberia taken at the summit meeting of States members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), held at Abuja on 28 and 29 August 1997.
١ - هذا التقرير مقدم عملا بقرار مجلس اﻷمن ١١١٦ )١٩٩٧( المؤرخ ٢٧ حزيران/ يونيه ١٩٩٧ ويتضمن سردا للتطورات التي شهدتها ليبريا منذ تقريري اﻷخيـر، المؤرخ ١٣ آب/ أغسطس ١٩٩٧ (S/1997/643)، بما في ذلك استكمالا بشأن المناقشات بليبريا التي دارت في اجتماع قمة الدول أعضاء الجماعة الاقتصادية لدول غرب أفريقيا، الذي عقد في أبوجا يومي ٢٨ و ٢٩ آب/ أغسطس ١٩٩٧.

The delegation of Mali, on behalf of the members of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), would like to take this opportunity to extend its sincere gratitude to the Secretary-General, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, and to all our other bilateral and multilateral partners, for their actions in favour of assistance to States to halt the illicit circulation and stockpiling of small arms and light weapons.
