The concept of sustainable development, defined in the report as development that " meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs " , shone a spotlight on a new dimension of development -- equity and justice, between and within generations, and the responsibility to act accordingly.

The seminal United Nations-sponsored report of the World Commission on Environment and Development, Our Common Future (1987), articulates sustainable development as a form of distributive justice that makes it possible to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

A. Efforts to achieve sustainable development 20. Sustainable development was famously defined by " Our Common Future " -- the landmark report of the World Commission on Environment and Development published in 1987 -- as development that " meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs " .
