Activity 1: Assessment of the status and trends of biodiversity in dry and sub-humid lands and the effectiveness of conservation measures;

The group agreed that the value of dry and sub-humid land biodiversity resides not only in its direct and indirect uses, but also in its socio-cultural and spiritual benefits, and concluded that most of the identified benefits of dry and sub-humid land biodiversity are of a global nature.

II. DRAFT PROGRAMME OF WORK ON BIOLOGICAL DIVERSITY of dry and sub-humid lands

At its fifth meeting held in Nairobi, Kenya in 2000, the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the CBD adopted the draft Programme of Work on Biological Diversity of dry and sub-humid lands.
اعتمد مؤتمر الأطراف في اتفاقية التنوع البيولوجي، في اجتماعه الخامس المعقود في نيروبي، بكينيا، في عام 2000، مشروع برنامج العمل بشأن التنوع البيولوجي للأراضي الجافة وشبه الرطبة.

52. The JWP between the CBD and the UNCCD on the biodiversity of dry and sub-humid lands has been approved by the CBD governing bodies as an essential tool for addressing the plight of this particular sector.

11. In accordance with decision V/23 of COP 5 of the CBD, an Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on the Biodiversity of dry and sub-humid lands was established by the SBSTTA jointly with the UNCCD secretariat.
11- ووفقاً للمقرر د-5/23 الصادر عن مؤتمر الأطراف في اتفاقية التنوع البيولوجي في دورته الخامسة، أنشأت الهيئة الفرعية المعنية بالمشورة العلمية والتقنية والتكنولوجية بالاشتراك مع أمانة اتفاقية مكافحة التصحر فريق خبراء تقنياً مخصصاً معنياً بالتنوع البيولوجي للأراضي الجافة وشبه الرطبة.

34. In accordance with decision V/23 of the fifth session of the Conference of Parties of the Convention on Biological Diversity, an Ad Hoc Technical Expert Group (AHTEG) on the Biodiversity of dry and sub-humid lands was established by the Subsidiary Body on Scientific, Technical and Technological Advice jointly with the secretariat of the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.

6. The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is continuing its support to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) through the ongoing implementation of the joint work programme on the biological diversity of dry and sub-humid lands and continued participation in the Joint Liaison Group of the Rio Conventions.

CBD - UNCCD Joint Work Programme on the Biodiversity of dry and sub-humid lands

The CBD/UNCCD joint work programme (JWP) on the biological diversity of dry and sub-humid lands gives guidance on developing synergy among activities addressing biological diversity, desertification and land degradation.
32- يقدم برنامج العمل المشترك لاتفاقية التنوع البيولوجي واتفاقية مكافحة التصحر بشأن التنوع البيولوجي للأراضي الجافة وشبه الرطبة التوجيه بشأن تطوير أوجه التآزر فيما بين الأنشطة التي تتناول التنوع البيولوجي والتصحر وتردي الأراضي.

Decision 17/COP.9 on " Biodiversity of dry and sub-humid lands " pertains directly to the UNCCD goals and objectives (see annex).
ويندرج المقرر 17/م أ-9 بشأن " التنوع البيولوجي للأراضي الجافة وشبه الرطبة " بشكل مباشر ضمن غايات اتفاقية مكافحة التصحر وأهدافها (انظر المرفق).
